ICONIC BAYOU CLASSIC TROPHY HEADS TO SMITHSONIAN
An iconic piece of Bayou Classic will find a permanent home in a prestigious national museum.
The Bayou Classic trophy was handed to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture last Friday. The trophy was given to the winner of the Southern versus Grambling State football game annually and was retired after the 41st Annual rivalry game in November.
“The Bayou Classic has become the pre-eminent sporting event within HBCU events,” says Smithsonian sports curator Damion Thomas. “It’s an honor to have this iconic trophy be a part of the museum’s collection.”
The trophy will be among the first exhibitions to open in the new 400,000 square foot space set to open next year in Washington D.C.
New Orleans Convention Company, Inc. ( NOCCI), the event management company for the Bayou Classic, and its Owner/President Dottie Belletto were instrumental in developing this opportunity with the Smithsonian and securing a permanent location to showcase this iconic symbol of the Bayou Classic and HBCU history.
